Ficus virens is a large, fast-growing tree, with a rounded canopy. The trunk is stout, irregular. Prominent bunches of short aerial roots hang from the trunk or lower branches. Leaves are large, alternate, ovate, elliptical, dark green but pale yellow when young. Briefly deciduous in the spring. Monoecious.
Flowers are inside a receptacle. The fruit is a sessile as it develops, but dark purple when ripe. Noted as reaching 30m tall with a 20m spread a trunk diameter up to 3m in its native habitat. Medium growth at a rate of 60cm p/a.
