Cassia fistula is a semi-evergreen, flowering, straight trunked small perennial tree with an attractive flowering tree of moderate size, slow-growing, rather delicate. Leaves are large, glabrous, Pinnate, shiny green above, paler below. Leaflets are oblong with around base. Flowers are large, bright yellow in drooping racemes appearing from mid-autumn through mid-summer. Fruits are long dark brown pods with laxative characteristics.
Grows 6-7m tall with a 4-6m spread and a trunk diameter of 1m. Fast-growing at a rate of 60cm- 1m p/a with a corresponding 10 – 15mm increase in trunk diameter.
