Ficus religosa is a large, upright, graceful tree with a rounded, spreading crown and aerial roots which start from the branches and grow down into the ground. The leaves are pendent and dark green, coppery, broadly ovate with a long pointed tip. Monoecious.
Fruits are sessile figs, round and dark purple when ripe. Fast-growing initially at a rate of 60cm -1m p/a for the first three to five years, slowing down thereafter, to a rate of 30-60cm p/a.
