Saccharum officinarum is an evergreen, flowering perennial grass with stout, tough culms that produce juice or sap high in sugar content. Grows 2-3m tall with 2-4cm thick culms. Noted as reaching 5m tall in its native habitat. Plants regenerate every year from the roots with double the number of canes as well as increased size of cane. Fast-growing at rate of 2m tall p/a.
